How are you dealing with Change?

The phrase “the only constant is change” may never have been more true than today. I look around and see little that is familiar and wonder what the world, my world especially, will look like in 5 days, 5 months, or even 5 years. Do you see and feel the same when it comes to change? Let’s talk a little more about this.

The Kotter change graphic at this link goes through the 8-step process that so many of us know and embrace. I’ll start at the top and personalize each of the steps.

  1. Creating a sense of urgency- On a personal level I have ramped up my efforts toward improving my personal health. This has affected my diet, my habits, and my exercise. It sometimes comes at the expense of driving my wife crazy, but I think it will improve my health and possibly lengthen my life.
  2. Building a guiding coalition-this step includes the outside resources I am employing for my health. The coalition includes my personal trainer, my swim coach, and resources I have subscribed to from Dr. Peter Attia.
  3. Strategic Vision-my vision is to live longer and live in better health
  4. Enlist assistance-my guiding coalition fills this bill as does my wife, my biggest supporter
  5. Remove barriers-this has not been difficult for me since I didn’t have that many barriers to begin with
  6. Short-term wins-I am starting to feel and see the results of my work, but I am also feeling the pain. Many muscles that have not been used for a while are screaming out to me.
  7. Sustain-I am working to put processes into place to keep my new habits in place. This reminds me that change also involves creating better habits as espoused in Atomic Habits by James Clear.
  8. Institute change-this has been covered to some degree and removing old habits as well as ingraining new habits will handle this.

Change, you cannot live with it in some cases, but without change, you will wither and die.

What changes are you dealing with and how are you embracing and working with these changes?
